What Is It?
The Annual Thrift Sale, is one of the largest of its kind in the South East. Each year people come from all over the Low Country to shop for treasures and bargains. The Sale, held each fall, is a primary source of funding for the Junior League. All of the proceeds from the sale are returned to the community through Junior League community improvement projects as well as developing the leadership of the Junior League members. The sale also provides the community with a low-cost option to purchase needed household goods. While the Thrift Sale is definitely a fall event, preparations for its success begin early in the year as members start to collect items, not only from their own homes, but from their family and neighbors as well. In fact, we open storage units in the summer to assist with some of our women and the unbelievable amount of Thrift they collect.
A Rich History
The Junior League Thrift Sale has been around since 1947. The first sale was held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. At that time, the sale was considered quite a success, netting $1,629.47 during the three-day long event. Over the years the location of the sale has changed, as the sale has grown, finally finding its home at the Savannah Civic Center for many years now. Our Thrift Sale can consistently raises over $100,000 for our community.
Why We Do It
All of the net proceeds go directly into the community through a combination of League-sponsored volunteer projects, community grants, and development of leadership skills of our members.
The Junior League’s current focus area is Women and Children’s Advocacy. The Junior League of Savannah believes that women and children deserve to be empowered through quality opportunities in order to thrive and to be contributing members of our community. These opportunities should develop the whole person socially, emotionally, physically as well as academically.
Our current projects include: Frank Callen Boys and Girls Club and America’s Second Harvest Food Bank Back Pack Buddies Program among other community outreach projects chosen each year.
What can you find?
There is something for everyone at the Junior League Thrift Sale. It is a great way for students and others to furnish their apartments or dorms on a limited budget. Many of our families do their holiday shopping, right on our floor! There are always a lot of cool, vintage items as well as sofas, tables and chairs, and desks. But wait, there’s more! From appliances, to bed linens, to bicycles, and holiday décor, and plants. Our children’s area comes stocked with clothing, swings, strollers, cribs and more. Our New Boutique offers items that are brand new at amazing discounts. This year we will also feature women’s business and formal attire.
